"I have known Ray Croff for over 10 years. He has managed my husband and my investments during that time. When I wanted to consider purchasing a business, he was the first person I reached out to.
I had many questions, first and foremost can I afford it, how do I know I am getting my moneys worth and how does this process work?
He and I discussed the process of placing an offer for a business. He began mapping the steps of an offer to closing. He did a valuation on the company for sale and discussed thoroughly the results. Without his in-depth knowledge of all the key factors to evaluate in a business, I would have gone off my general knowledge. In retrospect, it was very little and not the key factors.
When we discussed he being the broker for the buyer, I was hesitant. It seemed like a lot of money off the top and I wasn’t sure I needed it. How completely wrong I was. Within the first week, I had already determined I was over my head. He translated terms in English for me, assisted communication with the seller, lender, landlord and many others over the months. Many times, I was ready to throw my hands up and walk away. He would encourage me that this is the process and everything is going as it does in these situations. I have known Ray as a parishioner here at Immaculate Conception Church for many years. We served on our Finance Council together and on other projects. I turned to Ray to ask his advice on some financial issues related to the sale of our family business. Ray helped me make some decisions about how to invest my money, but he also asked how we were selling our business, how we were preparing everything we needed to sell it. In fact, we knew that we wanted to sell but had no real idea about the process to do that. There was a lot of family disharmony and distrust over how to sell. There had been a lot of heartache over the management of the business and grave questions of trust. Frankly, I did not want to expose Ray to all of this nor involve him in a very emotional conflict. I was anxious to get out of the business but did not want to see it totally lost, which had been in our family for more than 60 years.
Ray proved invaluable to this. I was able to get my siblings to agree to his help and he helped us get together our financials and other documents needed for the sale. Because we were selling the land separate from the business, it was a difficult sale and we had a very limited amount of time to do it. Ray was able to contact those who would be interested in the business and finally secured a buyer. He knew how to draw up the final papers and have everything done well.
